Top 5 Wellbeing Tips for Classes!
Here are top 5 tips to help your student (and teacher) wellbeing that can be used in class or on Zoom!
1. Use Positive Language
Positive language leads to more positive emotions which also leads to greater health and wellbeing. Creating opportunities to give compliments, reflect on things they have achieved or simply giving positive feedback is so beneficial for health and wellbeing. Make sure you make times in class dedicated to positive feedback from yourself and opportunities to compliment each other.
2. Make the start and finish of your classes memorable!
Students remember the beginning and end of classes the most due to the Primacy and Recency effect. The recency effect occurs when the short term memory is used to remember the most recent items, and the primacy effect occurs when the long term memory has encoded the earlier items. It is for this reason you should be thinking of new ways to engage your students at the start and end of classes! Can you mark the roll differently by asking a question at the start like “tell me the best part of your day today”? Can you finish a lesson with a gratitude activity? Make sure it is purposeful and memorable!
3. Practise Gratitude
In positive psychology research gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, improves their health, makes them better deal with adversity and build stronger relationships. You can show gratitude as a teacher or ask your students what they are grateful for today.
4. Use Intentional Breathing
Intentional breathing has been shown to slow the heartbeat, lower or stabilize blood pressure and lower stress. When we relax, the flow of blood increases around our body, giving us more energy. One common breathing technique is box breathing. In for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4.
5. Create Positive Meaning from your Experience
Two people can have the same experience but can create different meaning and therefore have different outcomes. Whatever you are going through at the moment, it is important to try and create a positive meaning from it. Are you going through another lockdown? Are you going through changes? Try and find a purposeful and positive meaning from what it going on, accept what you cannot control and focus on what you CAN.
Let me know how you go, I would love to hear from you!
